How are the White Stripes at the top of the list?

Rolling Stone did some survey, and Radiohead was named #2 in the "Best Live Band Playing Right Now" list, behind the White Stripes who took the #1 honors. Here's the top 20:

1. White Stripes
2. Radiohead
3. Pearl Jam
4. Rage Against the Machine
5. U2
6. Metallica
7. Flaming Lips
8. My Morning Jacket
9. The Hold Steady
10. Arcade Fire
11. The Raconteurs
12. Wilco
13. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
14. Red Hot Chili Peppers
15. Gogol Bordello
16. Kings of Leon
17. Muse
18. Dave Matthews Band
19. Tool
20. LCD Soundsystem

White Stripes play fun music but nothing to write home about. And I can't imagine them being that amazing live. Anyone seen them live? I can say from personal experience that Radiohead is AMAZING live. Even though I've already seen them, I would still want to see them again before I saw anyone else in the world.

Here is a really good website for all things Radiohead:

I felt cool having seen ANY of those bands live!

Wilco was amazing both visually and musically.

I don't think it's possible to put on more of a SHOW than The Flaming Lips, even if I was a little underwhelmed by the music.

Tool were pretty impressive on a muscal level as well.

When I saw Dave Matthews, he was drunk and seemed uninspired.

The footage I've seen of the White Stripes live has seemed pretty sloppy, but with all the requisite rock n' roll "Attitude."

It seems kind of silly to compare the live acts of U2 and the White Stripes, for instance. They're aiming for two totally different things.

What makes a good live show, anyway?

i think live music is all subjective. I could see Rage against the Machine putting on an awesome show but i would like a radiohead show more just because thats more of what i'm into. i often don't trust the rollingstone, that why i don't get it anymore. :)

Have you ever bought Paste magazine? Thats currently my favorite! :)

Of the top bands on this list i've seen: Radiohead, Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire (kind of), Wilco, Kings of Leon...all of these were good but by far the best was Radiohead...and wilco a close second.

I'm going to see the white stripe this weekend...i'll let you know what i think at that point. I'm also going to see muse this weekend, i'm a little more excited to see them now!

But i do agree...i don't see the white stripes even coming close to the radiohead experience. Radiohead is just spiritual, i don't see coming away from the white stripes with a spiritual feeling at all!

Rage isn't even a band any more. I think venue should be a factor. i.e. Rage in Mexico City vs. U2 at Slane Castle, Ireland. I would take either over any other band out there.

Dave wasn't drunk when I saw him, and they were awesome.

Having seen STP, but not Velvet Revolver. I still can't imagine a better front man than Scott W.

I'm with Mike on what makes a great show? What does R.S. question even mean? Best band playing, or band that puts on the best show?

I think Radiohead should be at the top of the list, hands down. Like Jenn said, it's a religious experience. I would love to see Muse and maybe Wilco. I know some of the other bands are probably incredible too, like Pearl Jam, Rage, U2, Chili Peppers, etc. And I know Flaming Lips would be entertaining.

Jenn-I actually don't read magazines much, I get everything online. That article was from www.greenplastic.com (a Radiohead site). I know Paste has good stuff in it though.

As far as Mike's question, I think to have a good live show, the audience really has to connect with the artist. With Radiohead, you feel like you're in this totally different world while they're playing. You look around you and you can see everyone else is too.

As far as Jeff's question, I think there are some bands that put on great shows that aren't that good musically. And then ther are some bands that are amazing musically but don't do well live. Then there are bands that are the best band and it just comes out in their performance, so they end up being the best band and best live show. They are such artists and their music is so good that they don't even have to try to put on a good show. It just happens, like Radiohead. I seem to have a slight Radiohead bias, don't I?

you should see wilco...they are both awesome musically and have the interaction with the audience that you mentioned...they are right up there in my top 5!
