Short survey

1. What are you reading right now (and would you recommend it?)

2. What was one of your favorite books as a child? As a teenager? Why?

Here are my answers:
1. The Glass Castle-definitely yes so far!
2. Hop on Pop because it was funny/Anne of Green Gables b/c I always loved the character in the movies immensely, and the books were just as great (I know that's backwards, but I saw the movies first).

Ok, I want to hear from you!

GLASS CASTLE is fabulous. I wonder if the author will have children. Won't that be another eye opener for her?

Childhood fav? All the Edgar Allan Poe books in the Book Mobile. Then all the Nancy Drew and other mysteries. In 1962 the librarian would keep a secret stash for me behind the desk. I never asked her to. In grade seven, I read all the biographies in the PC Junior High Library during 7th hour study hall out of boredom. I loved the female heroines who dared to show their brains like Madam Curie. This was my start on becoming an Engish teacher and lover of the written word. Some of my best friends are books. I don't like to use good grammar on the internet. I guess because I know that no one grades it. I once saw so much bad grammar on the internet when I looked at my first live chat that I said, "Does anyone out there have a college degree?" A fireman from Ponca City answered that he did. I never got on another chat room!

Currently reading: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence by Robert Pirsig with a book group.

It is alternately blowing my mind with the philosophy of science and making me angry at its obtuseness! :-)

Favs as a child: The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. This was a series of books very much in the fantasy realm.

I also liked the dog-adventure books of Jim Kjelgaard.

And who could forget Superfudge and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing!

It was such fun to get to go to the bookstore with my dad and family days at the library to visit all of the potential new friends!

Great subject! Please keep this up.

i'll have to tell justin about that motorcycle book...it sounds interesting. speaking of motorcyles...this is not really related other than it has the word motorycle in it...have you read motorcycle diaries?

Mike said...

I have not, but I heard it's really good. The movie was highly recommended too.

Speaking of which, my parents saw Once last weekend and want me to see it so I can "explain" it to them!

Amanda Fortney said...

yeah, the movie is what got me interested in the book. funny how that works! where did your parents see once? i thought it was postponed!

I am reading Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, and some young adult literature by Kai Meyer, and cornielia Funke. Anyone who likes young adult literature should definitely pick up inkheart and inkspell if they haven't heard of them. I just adore them! I am really into the German thing right now (all the above are German authors) so ....yeah. check out my gather site (sweett.gather.com) if you want to see some reviews I have been writing on it.
anyway...as a child. Number 1 was definitely Anne of Green Gables. I was obsessed from about5 9 until....well...33. In fact my dear friend Jenn Mills can tell you that she shares a birthday with the author Lucy Maud Montgomery because I remind her of that every year. :) When I was 28 I got to present a paper at the International Conference on Lucy Maud Montgomery at Prince Edward Island...if that tells you anything about my obsession.
Other favs? I loved the Nancy Drew. Loved Secret Garden (adored secret garden)..loved the boxcar children... so many books to love....

how cool is that that you went to prince edward island? i always wanted to go there. secret garden was one of my favorites too. and jenn, how cool is it that you share l.m. montgomery's bday?
